Bachelor of Design
Interior Architecture

Interior Architecture studies the relationships between the built environment, social interaction and material culture. The course rethinks the architectural profession and imagines roles beyond traditional disciplinary limits.

If you happen to like structures, design of the built environment, the intersection of architecture and conservation, this course is for you.

What will you study?

HISTORY OF ART & ARCHITECTURE

Objective of this course is

  • to analyse and understand various art forms and understand their application in interiors
  • to understand the influences of social and cultural aspects are reflected on interior design
  • to understand the evolution of interiors in Indian and global contexts

TECHNICAL DRAWING

The course introduces the fundamental techniques of concept sketches, design development sketches, presentation sketches, presentation renderings and architectural drawing and develops the appropriate skills for visualisation and representation. To introduce representation and design drawing techniques and to facilitate effective visual communication.

MATERIAL STUDY AND STRUCTURES

The course provides information on the properties, management, specifications, use, application and costs of the materials used in the interiors.

  • To impart knowledge on the various materials while highlighting the current trends and innovations in the usage of interior design materials.
  • To gain an in-depth understanding of the concepts associated with framed structures.
  • To provide knowledge of the different forces, force systems and structural behaviour of different members due to applied forces.

ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN

The focus of the course is to impart scientific building design and site planning as related to climate, particularly to tropical climates as found in India by giving importance for human comfort in interior spaces through natural elements. To equip the students with the basic understanding of climatic types in India and the impact on requirements of building design and site planning. To introduce them for planning for thermal comfort, day lighting and natural ventilation, familiarise them with the data, methods, principles, standards and tools for planning and designing for climatic comfort.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

This course will enable  course the students to have an understanding of the importance of sustainability and the understanding of “green” design, green building technology, renewable energy, water conservation techniques and sustainable practices.

ARCHITECTURAL ACOUSTICS AND LIGHTING

This course is intended to study Acoustics as determinants of built form with an emphasis on the application to the Interior spaces. To equip the students with tools for application of acoustical design in interiors. The knowledge of specific acoustic and lighting requirements of different spaces.

Skills to deal with acoustic and lighting problems within buildings. Knowledge that enables to deal effectively with specialists and consultants in acoustics and lighting.

Computer aided designing.

ART STUDIO AND SPATIAL PLANNING

Space Planning provides a specific design methodology for understanding the nature of spaces, scale and space within a space along with elements and organisation. To impart an understanding of perception of interior space through architectural elements. The fundamental objective of this course would be to develop a strong sense of space and the translation of space in its three-dimensional form to two-dimensional and vice versa. The structure of the course will emphasise the elements and principles of art as aspects that can be manipulated to add and remove focus both visually and  conceptually. Within the comfort of each students own visual language, each will be initiated to explore the limits of their pre-determined knowledge. The development of an individual aesthetic will be encouraged.

BUILDING SERVICES

This course is intended for understanding the significance of essential components in Interior Design, understanding electrical services and utilities generally installed and special types of services and facilities in the interiors and focusing on the principles as well as practical aspects and solutions. To expose the students to various ways to provide information on the principles of water supply and sanitation, design and functioning of water and sewerage systems To develop the understanding of layout, functioning and application of utilities and services in the interiors.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

This course provides an overview of rules and regulations in Interior Design practice. To impart awareness and technicalities of code of conduct in professional practice. Legal, technical and financial aspects of Interior Design practice and management skills for professional practice. Role of Interior Designer in society: Interior Design Profession as compared to other professions. Difference between profession and business. IIID and other organisations related to interior design profession. Interior Designers approach to works, ways of getting works: types of works, works partly executed by other Interior Designers. : various precautions to be taken before taking up the work, conditions of engagement between interior Designer and client: commencement of work.
