Certificate Programs

Print-Making

Printmaking is essentially the artistic process of creating an original ‘print’, by transferring an impression or an image from a matrix to another surface. It is not a direct process such as drawing or painting but any method that allows an artist to create an image in one place that is then transferred to another.

A matrix is essentially a template, and can be made of wood, metal, or glass. The design is created on the matrix by working its flat surface with either tools or chemicals. The matrix is then inked in order to transfer it onto the desired surface. To print from a matrix requires the application of controlled pressure, most often achieved by using a printing press, which creates an even impression of the design when it is printed onto the paper or fabric. (More modern printmaking techniques, such as screen
printing, do not require a press.) The resulting print is often the mirror image of the original design on the matrix. One of the great benefits of printmaking (save for monotype) is that multiple impressions of the same design can be printed from a single matrix.
There are 4 main categories that the various forms of printmaking fall into – Relief (lino/woodcut, wood engraving), Intaglio (etching, dry point, mezzotint), Stencil Based (screen-printing) and Planographic (lithography). Modern artists have expanded available techniques with mixed media also.

Printmaking is an exciting art form which at Rishihood, School of Creativity we are very passionate about. The printmaking lessons that we teach on the course combine both methodical precision with expansive room for creativity. There will be a selection of assignments throughout the course that can be submitted for assessment and feedback at regular intervals, to help students progress and develop their printmaking.
