Karthik Narayanan Mohan is an accomplished Machine Learning Scientist and Affiliate Faculty member at the University of Washington, USA. With a background in electrical engineering, he has made significant contributions to the field through research, teaching, and mentoring.
Karthik obtained a dual degree in infrastructure engineering from IIT Madras before completing his master’s degree in 2013 and PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle in 2014, under Dr. Maryam Fazel’s guidance.
His expertise lies in applying machine learning techniques to solve real-world problems. He has worked on deep learning models for recommender systems, diverse recommendation carousels, time-series anomaly detection, feature hashing for neural networks, and dimensionality reduction for similarity search and feature selection.
Karthik gained industry experience as a Research Scientist at Amazon from 2015 to 2017, and as a Machine Learning Scientist at AWS ML from 2017 to 2019. He furthered his expertise as a Senior Machine Learning Scientist at Facebook (Meta) from 2019 to 2021.
As an Affiliate Faculty member at the University of Washington, Karthik teaches courses such as Advanced ML, Computer Vision, Recommender Systems, AI and Health Care, and Advanced Introduction to Machine Learning. He impacts 25 to 50 students per course, equipping them with skills for success.
Karthik has authored numerous publications in esteemed journals and shares code blurbs for small pet projects, actively engaging with the ML community. He mentors students during his PhD and continues to guide aspiring ML professionals by teaching internal courses at Amazon and mentoring software engineers transitioning to the role of scientists.
